Mine never really got infected at all, it just got caught on something this morning and it ripped it out so I had to get it removed. Other things you can do to take care of yours is put a band aid on it before you go to bed and when you shower to prevent shampoo from getting on it, then clean it separately when you’re done showering. Use antimicrobial soap with warm water to clean it twice a day.
